Action-packed ‘occupational health’ training on campus

The ‘Occupational Health and Safety Seminar’, organized for the 7th time this year by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School, provided students with a day full of information and excitement. The campus was specially prepared for the event, with students climbing with expert instructors to see how roped climbing is done in challenging environments and at height. The young people were also informed in detail about what actions were taken to save a person trapped at height.
Students learned how to extinguish the fire by using new generation and environmentally friendly bioversal extinguishers. First aid training was also given to the students, who were informed about what to pay attention to in natural disasters such as floods, landslides, tornadoes and earthquakes.
The opening of the Occupational Health and Safety Seminar, attended by high school students as well as young people studying at the Izmir University of Economics Occupational Health and Safety Program, was held with a ceremony held at the IUE Conference Hall. IUE Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Levent Eren, Vocational School Director Burçin Önder, Izmir Chamber of Commerce Council Member Çağlar Kalkan, Occupational Health and Safety Program Instructor Dr. Serkan Bolat, Garanti BBVA Occupational Health and Safety Manager Göksel Geyik delivered a speech at the opening of the seminar. Afterwards, sessions were held with experts, and the students had the opportunity to ask the questions they were curious about. After the sessions ended, the young people who received training on rope access, working at height and rescue, firefighting and first aid had a very useful and exciting day.
WE SHOULD ALL INTERNALIZE
Stating that the number of natural disasters seen in our country has increased with the effect of climate change in the last period, IUE Vocational School Director Burçin Önder said, “Every year, thousands of people are injured in various workplace accidents. We see people who are trapped and need the right first response at the point of returning to life in disasters such as fire, flood and earthquake. Issues such as occupational health, safety and first aid are concepts that people of all ages should care about and internalize. We wanted to inform our students about these issues and show them how these are done in practice.”
WE ALSO INCLUDED HIGH SCHOOLERS
Önder stated the following: “By taking all the precautions on campus, we provided roped climbing training to students and showed how it is to work at height. We taught them how and from what angle the fire should be intervened. We gave very useful information to the students by practicing on the training models on first aid. We hosted approximately 150 high school students on our campus in order to inform them on these issues. From now on, we will continue to organize such events for them.”
THEY LEARNED NEW APPROACHES
Instructor Dr. Serkan Bolat said that they carried out the event in order to raise awareness about the health and safety of employees. Stating that occupational health and safety professionals came together with students and academics, Bolat said, “Students had the opportunity to get to know the new approaches applied in occupational health and safety with examples of good practices developed by companies.”
