Internship Commission

The organization of the internship, its coordination and the evaluation of the success in the internship are made by the Higher School Internship Commission. The College Internship Commission, which consists of three teaching staff, is appointed by the High School director from the related program staff and continues to work until a new academic member or staff is appointed by the Department High School director.

Duties of the Internship Commission

The duties of the Internship Commission are defined as follows:

a) To ensure that the internship is carried out in accordance with this directive,

b) Informing students about internship processes,

c) To verify the suitability of the workplace where the internship will take place, to the training program,

d) To produce solutions to the problems experienced by the students in case of problems during the internship process,

e) Approving, editing and keeping the official documents related to the internship and forwarding them to the relevant units of the university.

f) To carry out the procedures related to “MYST 104, MYST 204” Compulsory Internship.

g) To ensure that the internship is carried out in accordance with this directive,

h) To deliver internship related announcements to department students,

i) To store the official documents related to the internship submitted by the students.

Purpose of Internship

The purpose of the internship is to enable students to get to know the business areas related to the Applied English Translator program, learn the practices in the workplace, and gain experience by applying the knowledge and skills they have acquired through education and training.

Necessity of Internship Studies

Every student has to do internship in accordance with the provisions of this directive in order to gain practical working experience, improve their application skills and adapt to business life. In addition to the compulsory internship, if the student wishes to do a voluntary internship, the University supports the students to do their voluntary internship by paying the accident insurance.

Internship Period and Duration

It is recommended that students start their compulsory internship after the 1st year spring semester. Compulsory internship must be done for twenty working days (4 weeks) uninterruptedly, during the fall and spring holidays when there are no courses and exams. Students can complete their compulsory internship for 40 consecutive days during the summer break if they wish.

Institutions for Internship

Program students can do internships in private enterprises (translation bureau, media organizations, publishing houses…), international associations and non-governmental organizations where a translator and interpreter who is a graduate of the Applied English Translation program can work. Internship activity can be carried out in domestic or foreign organizations. In addition, students can do their internships in fields such as Foreign Trade and Tourism, which are sub-fields of translators and interpreters. They can also do their internship in the field of English language teaching. However, students are expected to do their 20-day internship in translation offices where they will actively translate.

The student has to get the approval of the Internship Committee before starting the compulsory internship in the company he/she finds.

Under normal circumstances, the internship is done face to face. The decision on this subject may change in line with the measures to be determined by the University Senate.

Internship Continuation Obligation

Attendance is mandatory. The student's attendance status is declared in the "Intern Evaluation Form" filled by the internship supervisor. Due to force majeure, the student may make excused absences up to 10% of the total internship period. In this case, the excuse of the student must be documented in accordance with the principles of İzmir University of Economics Associate Degree and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations. In case of absenteeism of more than 10% of the total internship period, the student's internship grade is processed as "Unsuccessful" (U=unsuccessful) and a repeat internship is foreseen. During the internship, the student has to comply with the daily working hours and these hours are determined by the internship supervisor at the workplace.

Internship Application

Students who will do their compulsory internship, “Internship Acceptance Form” signed by any of the members of the internship commission, stating the institution and date range where they will do the internship, approved by the workplace with a stamp and signature, a copy of the ID (can also be a copy of identity card, driver's license or e-government. ) and General Health Insurance Statement to the Career Guidance Center at least two weeks before the start of the internship.

Internship Documents

Intern Evaluation Form: It is a printed document filled by the workplace internship officer, evaluating the work done during the internship according to certain criteria and indicating whether the student is successful or not. This document must be sent directly to the Internship Committee by the internship supervisor after the student's internship ends, or it must be delivered in a sealed envelope by the student.

Internship Place Evaluation Form: It is a form in which the student provides feedback to the commission about the institution where he/she does his/her internship. It will be submitted to the commission in the internship file and the approval and signature of the internship supervisor is not required.

Internship File: It is the file that intern students will organize in accordance with the format to be determined by the Career Guidance Center. The internship file must be prepared in English, all pages must be stamped and signed by the workplace.

Internship File and other forms must be submitted to the Internship Committee within one week after the end of the internship.

The Internship Committee examines the content of the file and the Intern Evaluation Form and updates the internship course grade over OASIS by giving the student's success in MYST 104 , MYST 204 Compulsory Internship course or not.

Responsibilities of Internship Students:

The responsibilities of the intern student are as follows:

a) Students must comply with the internship program prepared by the program. Without the approval of the Internship Committee, they cannot decide on the institution where they will do their internship; They cannot change their internship period and the institution they will be working in.

b) The student has to complete the duties required by the internship on time and completely.

c) Every intern student must comply with the working, discipline and safety rules of the institution where he/she does his/her internship.

d) Students are responsible for carefully using the space, tools, materials and equipment used.

e) All kinds of responsibilities arising from not fulfilling these obligations belong to the students. When deemed necessary, action is taken against students in accordance with the provisions of the Higher Education Institutions Student Disciplinary Regulation.

f) During the internship, students comply with the rules regarding dress and the legislation that the staff of the institution must comply with.

g) At the end of their compulsory internship, students have to prepare the internship report together with the necessary documents in the format determined by the Internship Committee and submit it to the commission within one week after the end of the internship.

SUMMARY

Internship Stages/Step by step internship procedure

1- Deciding on the institution where the internship will take place and getting an acceptance from the place where the internship will be held (A verbal acceptance is sufficient).

2- Obtaining the approval of the internship commission from the internship commission (any of the commission members can be consulted by sending an e-mail).

3- Filling the Internship Acceptance Form. All forms can be obtained from this address: (https://kariyer.ieu.edu.tr/tr/forms). This form must be signed and stamped at the workplace.

WARNING! If the institution where the internship will be held requests that the insurance premium be paid by the university during the internship or that the internship is compulsory, the MANDATORY INTERNSHIP LETTER on the main page of the Career Guidance Center should be filled. The requested documents can be obtained from the Career Guidance Center after 13:30 the next day.
