Damla Kaleş, lecturer of the Applied English Translation Program, organized a 2.5-hour subtitled translation workshop with students and English teachers from the 11th class of Balçova Anadolu High School at the Interpreting and Translation Laboratory on May 16, 2024. In this workshop, high school students became acquainted with the translation of subtitles and captured the opportunity to do animated translations through related programs Students were very pleased to leave the workshop, which was quite effective and fun.
The Applied English Translation program hosted Ms. Nur Karen Bektaş, the owner of Neko Translation, on Thursday, April 18, 2024, as part of the "Apprentices Ask the Experts" event. During the event, Bektaş shared important insights into the mental perspective of the translation profession and what translators should pay attention to in the translation process. During the Tourism Days, participants had the opportunity to engage in the "Game Translation Workshop" prepared by Esat Yılmaz, Co-Founder of Belocal Localization Company. The workshop began with sharing basic information about the gaming field, followed by hands-on practice in a laboratory setting using computer-aided translation tools with example games.
Additionally, discussions about internship and job opportunities took place during the event, where our graduates considered the possibility of starting careers as freelance game translators.
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), which places great importance on its graduates’ and students’ strong communication with the business world, organized a three-day Career Fair. The fair, featuring 75 companies from various sectors such as technology, finance, textiles, automotive, aviation, health, logistics, and tourism, provided an opportunity for young individuals from IUE to meet the brands they aspire to work for or intern with in the future. Taking the first step towards new career opportunities, IUE students had the chance to ask questions and benefit from the experiences of professionals in the business world. Approximately 8,000 students attended the fair, exclusively held on the campus for IUE members.
COMPANIES WERE ALSO PLEASED
Stating that the fair was highly productive for both the young participants and the companies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evrim Üstünlüoğlu, IUE Dean of Students said, “We have great confidence in our students and graduates, knowing that they possess the qualities demanded by the business world. IUE students, who receive training from experienced professionals in the industry, are proficient in English, have effective communication skills, and exhibit a project-oriented perspective, meet the qualified workforce needs of companies. In this regard, the Career Fair has been a significant gain for both young individuals and companies. We received numerous positive feedback from the companies, and we were pleased to witness that many of our students were invited for job interviews.”
REALISTIC SIMULATIONS
Mentioning that they conducted interview simulations during the fair to allow young individuals to experience a real job interview and minimize the excitement and stress they might face, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Üstünlüoğlu said, “The interview simulation is crucial for reducing the excitement and stress young people may experience during a job interview. We included the interview simulation in the fair taking into consideration the wishes of students. They experienced what a real interview is like by having one-on-one interviews. IUE Career Guidance Center and Career Club, actively involved by students within the University, successfully collaborated to ensure the success of this fair. I congratulate everyone in the team for their dedicated and disciplined work. We will continue to meet with graduates and students in the upcoming period. We will develop new projects to enhance young individuals’ personal competencies and help them start ahead in the business world.”
The students of the Applied English Translation program at the Vocational School attended the Travel Türkiye Fair held at the İzmir Gaziemir Fairgrounds from December 7 to 9, 2023. The program students, who supported the Vocational School booth, gained practical experience in interpreting with foreign guests visiting the booth. Additionally, they seized the opportunity for internship discussions in the field of translation at the simultaneously held Health Fair, engaging in business meetings with internationally renowned health organizations. They also established new friendships by communicating with foreign country booths. We extend our sincere thanks to them for their valuable contributions.
On November 30, 2023, Thursday, as part of the Practical English Translation Program, Apprentices Ask the Masters Event, Meders Medikal A.Ş hosted Ms. Özge Özge, Medical Translator and Marketing Specialist. Within the scope of the event, Özge shared valuable insights about the relationship between the translation profession and the medical and healthcare field, providing important information about the working areas of medical translators in hospitals and medical companies. On November 1, 2023, Wednesday, as part of the "Apprentices Ask Masters" event within the Applied English Translation program, we had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Jacob DeCamillis, a Freelance Translator specializing in Culture and Art Translation. During the event, Mr. DeCamillis shared valuable insights into various aspects of the translation profession, including the translation process of İlber Ortaylı's art history book, the relationship between translation and culture and art, and the important domains where cultural translators work, such as national palaces, fairs, consular events, and more. Furthermore, Mr. DeCamillis emphasized the significance of the Turkish language in the field of translation and shared his experiences related to both Turkish and Canadian cultures. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Jacob DeCamillis for sharing his valuable knowledge.
